10th Annual Transport and Grand Garage Sale
Monday 28 May 10:00am - 4:30pm on the Croft and around the village

In addition to the Transport Festival the day saw the village-wide Grand Garage Sale Tour where vintage buses ferried visitors around the many garage sales all over the village. The combination of the two events made this a unique day out for all the family and unlike last year the weather was wonderful with shoppers out early looking for a bargain.

Over 1,000 raffle tickets were sold, with first prize of a Klondyke Steam Roller experience won by Maggie Gawthorpe. Spot on 2.45pm a hurricane flew low over Rolleston.

Announcement (Summer 2018 Rollestonian Article)

The Transport Festival will be nearly on us by the time you read this. This will be the tenth Festival, quite a milestone.

Parking on the streets was much better last year with the use of the field next to the Scouts. We hope to be able to use that again. The vintage buses prove to be really popular and this year we are hiring two again as some people didn’t manage to get a ride last year. This year we are trying to liaise with Clay Mills Pumping Station to enhance both events. One of the buses will do the normal tour of the village and one bus also will go to the Pumping Station. The engines will be in steam and the entry price will be reduced for the duration of our Festival.

Last year’s decision to make the event free entry and ask for donations was not successful. This year will be charging again. To make it easier the charge will be £5 per adult with children of school age free, with each party getting a free brochure. This year TL Darby has agreed to sponsor us again. We are very grateful to Richard and The TL Darby team for their support.

Our raffle is always well supported and makes a significant contribution to the funds that we can distribute to our charities. We always try to find a novel major prize associated in some way with the event; last year's winner was be invited to spend a day with a master blacksmith forging their own memento of the day. This year, due to the very good feedback we received, we are repeating the steam roller trip out to a pub lunch. Thanks to Phil Jeffs of Klondyke Mill for organising this.

St Mary's Grand Garage Sale continues as the Fringe Festival event and is visited by many on the day - there are many bargains to find!

As usual we are asking for volunteers on the day again. Everyone who helps enjoys the day; it is very rewarding. We will have a helpers/stewards meeting at Rolleston Club on the Thursday before the Festival (May 24th) at 7-30 pm. If you would like to help but can’t make the meeting please contact John Morris on 01283 814181, email rolleston.transport.festival@talktalk.net, or any committee member.

This year will be the last year I shall be leading the organisation of the Festival (10 years is enough). Much of the organisation has been shared out and committee members have all taken on a part of the organisation so that no one has too onerous a task. Hopefully this will ensure the continuation for another ten years. Due to personal circumstances four existing committee members are unable to help at present, although nominally being on the committee. Please consider joining the committee – it is a really enjoyable way to raise money for charity and help Rolleston.
