Winter 2013 News

Hello!

This term the children have been creating special shoeboxes all about themselves which they have loved sharing with each other. We have seen friendships blossom in such a short space of time as the new children have settled in with ease.

We had a fun filled week of Forest Schools at the Junior site, hunting for bugs, going on a bear hunt, having our snack and creating artwork.

We are starting to collect items for our shoe box appeal with Samaritan’s Purse and will start packing them soon. This is a charity we have supported for many years and is a real opportunity for us to talk to the children about citizenship and sharing a little when we have so much.

We will be having a special Bake Off Week from Monday the 18th November where parents and carers can come and help the children to do cooking projects.

In January, we will be starting a trial where children in their Pre-School year will be able to stay with us throughout the day from 9am to 3.30pm. Spaces are limited so please contact Jill Huckerby for more information or to reserve a place.

What a busy year! Where did the time go?
Five new children joined us in the last half term, some of whom had been accepted into Foundation at John of Rolleston and wanted to make some friends before school. There were also some early starters who will stay for another year. We looked at ‘Food & Health’ and had our very own gym and juice bar. The children loved getting changed into PE kits and exercising. We made smoothies, fruit salads, talked about healthy foods and the effect exercise has on our bodies. The highlight was a visit to Paget Farm and Orchard with lots of parents, carers and grandparents joining us.

We spent a week making decorations together for the carnival float in the theme of ‘The Lion King’, many parents and carers came in to help us. Thank you to all who helped get the float ready on the day, those that helped with the fabulous decorations and to everyone at home. The costumes were amazing…we won…4 years running must be a record!

The older children brought packed lunches into Pre-School in preparation for big school and they also tried hot school dinners which was great fun. Visits were made to the classrooms at school and we did lots of letter and sounds work ready for next year. Half term finished with a giant sponsored bike ride on the school playground which was a huge success. 35 Pre-School families took part…a big thank you to all involved.

Throughout the last half term we looked at ‘Homes’, enjoyed the fabulous weather outside, built dens and made houses out of boxes. Our 40th Anniversary Family Camp in June at Cross Lane Farm was a lovely experience …lots of happy campers. Thank you to all involved. On Saturday June 29th we held our annual Family Fun Day fundraiser at The Alderbrook Site, John of Rolleston School. The sun shone and everyone enjoyed the bouncy castle, BBQ, games, stalls, activities and refreshments. Your support was very much appreciated.

A very big thank you to all parents and carers that helped at the end of term with our ‘big clean’ at Pre-School. Your support is invaluable and Pre-School was truly sparkling afterwards! The older children had their Leavers Trip on Friday 12th July at The Adventure Farm, Tatenhill. A fantastic occasion enjoyed by all on a very hot and sunny day. We wish all of our children leaving for big school lots of luck. Thank you for many happy, wonderful memories.

Summer 2013 News

We are celebrating our 40th Anniversary at Pre-School this year.

We are holding a number of events to celebrate this occasion the main one being our ‘Family Camp’ to be held in Rolleston on the 15th and 16th June. Please ask for more details, it would be wonderful to see you there. We will also have our annual stalls at the Transport Festival and at Community Day and we will be holding our Fun Day again on the 29th June. Your support at events is always appreciated.

Last half term was short and sweet but we managed to pack in as much as ever. Six new children joined us which was wonderful, a big welcome to you all. We held our ‘Book Week’ and as always parents and grandparents were really supportive in our reading sessions and the children had lots of fun dressing up.

We looked at ‘Spring & Growth’ during our time together and the children had fun in our Fruit and Veg shop role play. We had hoped to plant lots of seeds but the weather was not on our side so at the time of writing we still have that to look forward to! We read ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and looked at lots of rhyming and alliteration activities. We had our ‘Maths Stay and Play Week’ and parents and carers took part in activities each day with their children at Pre-School.

The last week of snow did not put us off going to the woods for ‘Forest Schools’ and the children had fun in the mud, finding dinosaur eggs, hunting for tracks and tasting hot chocolate.

We are looking forward to spending even more time outdoors this half term as we look at ‘Food & Health’. We will be reading the Hungry Caterpillar and talking about lifecycles. We have been studying different letters and their sounds every week and the children have brought in items from home for show and tell to support this.

The sun shone for our morning and afternoon visits to the Community Farm and Orchard at Paget School on April 30th. Many parents and carers came along too and it was a very enjoyable and tiring day. We especially enjoyed running around the orchard, making up songs, meeting the huge chickens, the new goats and ‘Dave’ the owl! Thank you to all involved.

At the time of writing we are getting ready for the Scout Carnival. The children are very busy painting and making masks and decorations for their float. Parents and carers have been invited into Pre-School for craft sessions during and after Pre-School, a big hit with all involved.

Our older children have been enjoying getting to grips with their ‘Big School’ tasks. These have included learning to recognise their surnames for school, trying on PE kits and bringing in packed lunches.

We said a sad farewell to Mrs Buckley and she wanted to say thank you for your cards and kind gifts. We wish her all the very best for the future. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Eve Mawhinney onto the Pre-School team. Eve brings with her a wealth of teaching experience and we are thrilled to have her on board.

Spring 2013 News

Hello. We started the New Year with 11 new children which has been wonderful. They have all settled in well and it has been lovely meeting them and their families.

We have had a ‘Maths Week’ and we have looked at "Sound & Music" with the children.

We had a stage area, lots of dressing up costumes and musical instruments (including a drum kit!) to keep us all very busy and entertained. Throughout our ‘Music Week’ we listened to music from around the world and had lots of visits to the school hall to dance and move to music. The children also had fun creating their own musical instruments.

We have enjoyed many stories together and have been on nature walks wrapping up warm, wearing our wellies and enjoying muddy fun, fresh air and snow!

The children have celebrated the Chinese New Year, tried different food, listened to Chinese music and we created artwork together.

This year Pre-School is running the annual Pancake Race event on the Croft and the children have enjoyed making pancakes for snack and racing. They have also enjoyed making their own sandwiches.

Many thanks must go to Mr Peake who spent time with us whilst he studied for his Early Years Professional status. We now welcome Mrs James who will be spending time with us whilst she studies for her Early Years Professional status. Sandra will be with us on Monday until the end of the year as well as being our Playgroup Liaison Officer.
