Autumn 2016 Newsletter

By the time you read this the 2016 cricket season will be coming to a close, but it’s been a season to remember both on and off the field of play.

The first team’s first season in the Derbyshire Premier League has been very successful and the team has more than held its own against much stiffer opposition compared to last year.

There have been several exceptional performances by various individuals but worthy of particular mention are centuries from opening batsman Richard Green and on the bowling front a seven wicket haul in one match for Alex Brown

The second XI are also doing well and challenging for a promotion again from Division 4S, having just failed last year.

Having been promoted last season the third XI are finding life a bit more difficult this time around, but hopefully will survive in Division 5S.

Our fourth team is a mixture of youngsters and more experienced players and results to date have been what could best be described as inconsistent with some good wins and not-so-good defeats.

Junior teams have done well again with the Under 17s reaching the Fred Lowe Cup Final.

Off the field the new pavilion is almost complete. An open invitation to Rollestonians and local people to come and have a look around was held on June 29th but attendance was low, possibly because of the weather. However, the official opening event on July 8th, attended by the Mayor, Andrew Griffiths MP and Ben Robinson, representing The Consolidated Charity of Burton upon Trent, with their partners was a great success with around 200 people attending. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the evening.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to come down to the ground for a look around, you are very welcome to do so any evening during the cricket season which ends in mid-September, and of course there are matches at The Willows every weekend during that time.

Our sponsor’s and supporter’s ‘Buy a Brick’ wall is filling up nicely, but there are still spaces available. If you are interested please see the separate notice below.

Finally, if you are interested in becoming a member whether as a player (senior, junior or a ‘Willower’), a social member, or if you would like more information about the Club, fixtures, social events etc. please contact the Club secretary Steve Cooper ( 07739 760786 ) or Michael Acton at the Club ( 01283 813449 ). ‘Buy A Brick’ Campaign

The Willows - home to Rolleston Cricket Club - is opening a second ground at the venue in 2016. To accommodate 4 teams playing here every Saturday through the summer our clubhouse has undergone extensive building work with new changing rooms, offices, disabled facilities, new kitchen and landscaped viewing gallery- all designed with the wider community in mind

Our Committee has worked incredibly hard on this project. Sponsorship, grants, donations and the efforts of our social committee have helped raise desperately needed funds.

The Club is investing heavily in our community building and we would like you to be a permanent part of its future.

Here is the opportunity then to be a patron of your village Club, past, present & future, and to have your name etched into our Patrons Wall and be forever associated with its continuing development. Starting at £40 each investor will have a name engraved brick. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Summer 2016 Newsletter

At the time of writing, the start of the 2016 cricket season is only two weeks away and looking out of the window it’s windy, raining and cold - not the best cricketing weather !

However, everyone at the Club is looking forward excitedly and expectantly to the new season, with hopes high for a repeat of last season’s successes.

With the promotion to the Premier League it was decided to strengthen the first team squad with an overseas player from South Africa and he will hopefully be arriving in mid-April.

The 2016 League season started on Saturday 23rd April with the 2nd XI at home to Winshill CC and the 1st XI making their debut in the Derbyshire Premier League with a trip to Cutthorpe CC.

Our 3rd and 4th teams now play their home matches at Rolleston instead of having to journey to Marchington ... so there will be two matches for you to watch every Saturday if you come along. Thanks here are due to our groundsmen – David Woodburn and John Hodson – for making this possible.

The building work on the new extension to the Club will hopefully have been completed before the season starts, but as I write these notes there is still a fair bit of internal and peripheral work to be done. Thanks are due to all those Club members and colleagues who have helped to make this possible. We have booked an official opening date for 8th July but before that, and because so many Rollestonians have been asking about what has been going on, it is hoped to have an open day/evening for you to come along and see what has been achieved. Watch out for details on the village notice-boards.

We are again running four senior League teams on Saturdays plus Sunday and midweek friendly teams. Junior teams are run at U-11 ( Kwik cricket and hard-ball ), U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels.

We also run a friendly team, known as ‘The Willowers’ for non-regular cricketers and they play evening matches throughout the season. If you fancy a game please contact the Club.

A fixture against an MCC XI is planned for 4th August.

There are also currently three Derbyshire representative matches scheduled – Girls U-15s on 9th June and 12th July and a Boys U-10s on 8th August. All of these start at 12 noon.

A full list of fixtures is available from the Club on request. Visitors are always welcome during the season.

If you would like to sponsor the Cricket Club you might be interested in our ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign – if so please contact the Club or Club secretary – details below.

Spring 2016 Newsletter

The 2016 cricket season will soon be with us, but looking at the ground under water twice in one week in early January and future weather predictions it will need a dramatic change in weather conditions for the new season to start on time.

However, everyone at the Club is looking forward excitedly and expectantly to the new season, with hopes high for a repeat of last season’s successes.

With the promotion to the Premier League it has been decided to strengthen the first team squad with an overseas player from South Africa and other experienced local players.

The 2016 season is due to start on Saturday 23rd April with the 1st XI making their debut in the Derbyshire Premier League with a trip to Cutthorpe CC, the other team promoted from Division 1 last year. The first home match will be the following Saturday, 30th April, against one of the Premier League’s top teams – Sandiacre Town CC.

Indoor nets and coaching sessions at Abbotsholme have now started and attendance has been good with everyone keen to get themselves fit and ready.

The new playing area will be ready for action for our 3rd and 4th teams, so they will no longer have to journey to Marchington for their home matches. ( This should also help the bar receipts ! )

At the time of writing building work on the new extension to the Club is going well and soon it will be all hands to the pump to get the necessary services installed ready for the start of the season.

We are again running four senior League teams on Saturdays plus Sunday and midweek friendly teams. Junior teams are run at U-11 ( Kwik cricket and hard-ball ), U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels, and there will coaching evenings at the ground in Rolleston during the season, probably from April onwards, depending on the weather.

We also run a friendly team, known as ‘The Willowers’ for non-regular cricketers and they play evening matches throughout the season.

A full list of fixtures will be available from the Club at the beginning of April.

On the administration front, following the resignation of Bob James as Chairman of the Club, former secretary Trevor Foster has been elected to take on this position.

If you are interested in becoming a member whether as a player ( senior, junior or a ‘Willower’ ), as a social member, or if you would like more information about the Club, fixtures, social events etc. Please contact the Club secretary Steve Cooper ( 07739 760786 ) or Michael Acton at the Club ( 01283 813449 ).
