Rolleston Music Circle & Choral Society News 2013

Winter 2013 News

It's nearly 50 years since our first public performance (in May 1964) but until a few weeks ago we had never performed at Rolleston Club. We put that right in October, when around 70 of you came along to join us in the last concert of our "Greatest Hits" tour - a thoroughly tuneful, cheerful and friendly evening. Thanks to Kate Goldsmith and all at the Club for making us so welcome. Earlier in the autumn we had taken the tour to Stapenhill, Newton Solney and Horninglow, and met enthusiastic audiences at all three venues.

We've attracted several new members over the past year, and we now number around 50 singers. We're now busy preparing for our Christmas concerts. On Sunday 8th December, at 2.00 pm we are taking part in the Mayor of East Staffordshire's Christmas Charity concert at Burton Town Hall, so please come along and support the good causes. Then on Wednesday 18th December, at 7.00 pm we will be staging our own Christmas concert of carols, music and readings at St Mary's Church, Rolleston-on-Dove. We are pleased to say that once again, we will be joined by children from John of Rolleston Primary School, so it will be an occasion for all the family. We look forward to seeing lots of you there.

New members are always welcome: we rehearse at 7.40 pm on Wednesday nights at the Methodist Chapel, Chapel Lane.

Autumn 2013 News

We are fast approaching the 50th anniversary of our first performance and this autumn, by way of a curtain-raiser, we're staging our "Greatest Hits Tour": four concerts in four different locations, with a wide variety of music to suit all tastes - with the emphasis on well-known tunes. We kick off on Friday 6th September, at St Peter's Church, Stapenhill, where we'll be joined by A Choir'd Taste, a group of singers fom Melbourne (South Derbyshire, not Australia!). Then on Wednesday 16th October we'll be at St Mary's Church, Newton Solney.

They'll be followed by two appearances nearer home: on Saturday 19th October at St John's Church, Horninglow; and on Thursday 24th October at the Rolleston Club - a new departure for us, which we hope will be a great success.

All concerts will start at 7.30 pm, with tickets priced at £5.00 You will be very welcome at one, some or all of these events, and we are sure you will have a good time. More details nearer the time, but tickets will always be available on the door.

Summer 2013 News

We are fast approaching the 50th anniversary of our first public concert in 1964, so this autumn we're presenting Rolleston Choral Society's "Greatest Hits" - although the title may be a little different. We have much to be proud of over the years, and we're sure there will be something in this event for everyone. The concert will take place on Saturday 19th October, at St John's Church, Horninglow. We are also exploring the idea of taking the show "on the road" by performing at some other churches in the area in the same week. More details should appear in the autumn edition of The Rollestonian.

Spring 2013 News

2012 was one of most successful years in recent times, and this year we aim to keep up appearances! Our next concert will be on Saturday 18th May, at the Priory Church of St Mary in Tutbury. We hope to show off the lovely acoustics at this old church to their full advantage. The programme will include Sleep by the American composer Eric Whitacre, described as "one of the most beautiful choral works of the 21st century". We will also feature Lux Aeterna by another modern US composer, Morten Lauridsen. John Rutter's Requiem is a favourite with singers and audiences alike, and the programme will be completed by Like As The Hart by Herbert Howells, and Nunc Dimittis by Gustav Holst.

We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7.40 pm at the Methodist Chapel. We are pleased to have gained several new members over the past year or so, but more are always welcome.
