Summer 2003

The AGM in March saw the resignation of 4 long-standing members of the committee - Tom Martin - Chairman, Trevor Bottrill - Vice-Chairman, Barbara Bowyer and Margaret Cargill. All had given many years of commitment to the Civic Trust and this was acknowledged at the AGM.

Tom Martin gave notice of his intention to resign last summer, and in the ensuing months committee members had opportunities to absorb and to reallocate the numerous roles which Tom had assumed as chairperson. The new committee is now ‘up and running’ and we are delighted to welcome 5 members who have decided (with minimal arm-twisting) to boost the committee up to a total of 14! Tom, Trevor, Barbara and Maggie will obviously be missed, but it is reassuring to see the committee moving on with interest and enthusiasm. (I am most appreciative of the Civic Trust’s presentation to me of an engraved glass bowl following my second period as Chairman. I have assured the new committee of my continuing support from the back-benches! – Tom Martin)

Pancake Races

As a result of police reservations on the use of Brookside this year, the races were transferred to The Croft. This proved to be a popular choice and provided weather and ground conditions allow we shall probably seek Parish Council approval to do the same next year. We were grateful to the Pre-School parents for organizing post-race pancakes and refreshments again. Pancake sales and the cash collection generated over £120 for St Mary’s Fabric Fund.

Spring 2003

Civic Trust Award

Each year the Civic Trust makes an award for a “project or scheme that has enhanced significantly the village environment, or a communal activity”. This year, the Civic Trust is pleased to announce that the award has been made to Mr & Mrs John and Debra Hayes for the refurbishments that they have carried out on the Post Office and Topiary Cottage. These have made a significant improvement to the appearance of the Spread Eagle junction.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM will be held following the usual monthly meeting at the Spread Eagle, on Wednesday 19th March. Tom Martin will be retiring as Chairman as well as long serving committee members Margaret Cargill and Barbara Bowyer. If you feel that you can help on the committee we would be delighted to hear from you (instead of being bullied into it!).

Membership & Subscriptions

The modest annual subscription (£2 for an individual & £3 for a family) helps us fund Rollestonian, and maintenance work in Brookhollows, maintenance of the church floodlights, and other village projects. If you support our aims we would welcome your subscription, even as a sleeping member! Contact our membership secretary, Mrs Heather Taylor, The Old Hall, Hall Grounds or any other committee member.
