Sent to Coventry (and back)
Friday 9 September

As the church clock struck 7 on a gloomy September morning, five intrepid cyclists set off to ride from Rolleston on Dove to Coventry and back, a total of 90 miles. They completed the ride in a riding time of 6 hours 50 minutes, and arrived back at St. Mary's church to a tumultuous welcome from a large crowd of family and friends. They were greeted in the Old Grammar School, where a sumptuous buffet tea was laid out, including a special cake inscribed to "Ian, Terry, Rod and the two Bobbies." For some reason, they were reluctant to sit down, and ate their tea standing.

Their epic journey was part of a County-wide sponsored cycle ride: half the sponsorship in Rolleston will go to St. Mary's Church building funds, and the other half to the Staffordshire Historic Churches Trust, a charity which helps to preserve the fabric of our finest old churches.

The picture on the left above shows (left to right) P.C. Dave Lear, P.C. Kev Ball, Rod Paul, Rev. Ian Whitehead and Terry Williams, at the start of the ride. The one on the right and below were taken outside Coventry Cathedral.
