6. COMMUNICATIONS and FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

A linear village, Rolleston on Dove extends for some two miles along the C91 Tutbury to Clay Mills road linking the A511 in the west to the A38 in the east.

The village projects southwards for about a mile and is serviced by two roads which join together into Rolleston Road leading to Burton on Trent. Three country lanes, without footpaths, lead from the village: Anslow Lane running south west to the A511, Marston Lane bearing north to the River Dove and Craythorne Lane heading south east to Stretton. The approaches to the village from all directions are rural in character, the roads being lined with mature trees and hedges on either side. The Public Footpaths are well marked and regularly used.

There are two bus routes connecting the village to Burton on Trent, Derby and beyond.

Rail connections from Tutbury and Hatton Station (one & a half miles) and Burton (4 miles) give excellent Regional and National Services in all directions. Accessibility to East Midlands Airport has been vastly improved following the opening of the A38/M1 link at Burnaston.

Traffic can be congested in the village centre due to the primary school sites, a problem which is impossible to resolve particularly in inclement weather when yet more parents collect children by car. The problem has been exacerbated by children coming from a wider catchment area - a spin-off from greater parental choice.

The Lawns from Brook Hollow

Traffic calming has recently been introduced on part of the C91 (Station Road) but the remaining sections, Dovecliff Road and Church Road are presently excluded from this scheme which has received a mixed reception from the public. It may well be that the opening in 1997 of the Derby Southern By-pass together with other new by-passes being completed on the A50, will help to reduce further through traffic in the village.

Other developments such as the creation of a commercial horse riding facility at Craythorne could create similar problems on a lane that already carries much leisure traffic. Good direction signing is required to avoid difficulties for larger vehicles. Craythorne Lane lies partly in the East Staffordshire Highways delegated area (that within Stretton Parish) and maintenance treatments in that part have been different from those adopted in the Rolleston section in recent times. A continuation of the more rural approach is preferred.

The location of the projected additional 6,500 dwellings for East Staffordshire in the Draft Structure Plan for Staffordshire and the additional industrial developments at Foston and the A38 corridor, may be significant in future local traffic movement.
