Day of Traditional English Events
Saturday 3 July, 11am - 5pm
on the Croft, in the Old Grammar School, St Mary's Church, Rolleston Club and at the Almshouses

The place to be on Saturday 3 July was Rolleston on Dove. There was a Day of Traditional English Events in the heart of the village arranged by the Rolleston on Dove Special Events Committee.

The day started with the ringing of the Church bells. The Mayor of East Staffordshire, Councillor David Whitmore, performed the Opening Ceremony, with Queen Elizabeth the First, “Gloriana” in attendance. On the Croft the day started with judging of the children’s maypoles by the Queen followed by maypole dancing. During the day the Barton Fiddle Folk played and there were two performances by the Hearts of Oak Morris Men and two magic shows. The Rolleston Mummers also performed.

There were craft displays, tea and coffee and cream teas, hot dogs, candy floss, a honey stall, a skittle alley and bowling (for a pig, or at least part of one).

Decorated boats, sponsored by village organisations, were on the Alderbrook, and there was a well-dressing at the Almshouses.

Rolleston Club was open, where there was a model railway display. Tea, coffee and light lunches were available.

There was an Open Art Exhibition in the Old Grammar School, displays in the Church on the sale of the Mosley Estate and on the Choral Society's 40th Anniversary, and a chance to have a go at brass rubbing. The organ was played and Doveside WI belle-plate ringers entertained. John Underhill demonstrated a pole lathe in the churchyard.

The programme of events can be seen here.
