RODSEC - News (Winter 2003 - Rollestonian)

There are twelve of the one hundred primroses that we planted showing some signs of life, after the disastrous mowing. The fate of the snowdrops and winter aconites still has to be determined. I have been assured by the Chairman of the Parish Council, Mr. John Morris, that the primroses will be replaced.

The "Make 'em Laugh" evening, which we put on jointly with the Stretton STARS, was much enjoyed, as was the magic lantern show by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gilbert. Many thanks to all those who helped to make both evenings successful, and to those who came along to enjoy these and all the other RODSEC events. It is gratifying to see so many people getting together and enjoying themselves.

On 1st October Mrs. Isabel Davies provided us with a lot of information on how to do well dressing. Twenty people attended the meeting and were able to "have a go". There is more to well dressing than one might expect! There will be another meeting on Wednesday 14th. January in the Old Grammar School at 7.30 p.m. Please come along if you are interested. Mr. Colin Brodie has very kindly agreed to make the boards, so at least we have a start.

On Saturday 31st. January we shall be visited by Queen Elizabeth I, in the form of Mrs. Lesley Smith of Tutbury Castle, who will give us her "Gloriana" talk. This is a joint venture with Rolleston on Dove WI: we shall share the work and the profits. The meeting will be at the Scout HQ at 7.30 p.m. and will cost £5 including supper. There will be a licensed bar. Tickets will be limited, so get yours early, from Starbuck News, the Post Office or from me.

We are looking forward to our Day of Traditional English Events from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday 3rd. July next year. This will take place on the Croft, in the Old Grammar School and St. Mary's Church. Admission will be free. We shall have a maypole, morris men, Cheyney's Magic Show, Doveside WI belle plate ringers, a skittle alley, cream teas, hot dogs, candyfloss, craft demonstrations, a display based on the sale of the Mosley estate, brass rubbing, music in church, and bell ringing. We hope to revive the mummers' play too. Put the date in your diary now. It will be a fun-packed day, with something for all the family to enjoy. Further details will be given nearer the time.

"Gilberts' Galantee Show"
Saturday 20 September 2003

Members and friends of the Rolleston on Dove Special Events Committee (RODSEC) were treated to a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Victorian magic lantern show when Ray and Pat Gilbert presented a new version of their "Gilberts' Galantee Show". This latest collection of valuable old slides was based on the theme of Victorian childhood, with nursery rhymes, children's games and a moving collection of images of the Dr. Barnardo's children. The main picture shows Ray and Pat Gilbert with their Victorian lantern slide projector.

The event was held in the Rolleston Scout HQ, and there was the usual excellent RODSEC supper. The evening was also a financial success, with all proceeds being put towards the next major RODSEC event, a "Traditional English Summer Day", which will be held on 3 July 2004.

Commemorative Plaques

To mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee last year, Rolleston on Dove Special Events Committee (RODSEC) raised money to erect two extra seats on the Croft overlooking the Alderbrook, complete with hard standing and commemorative plaques. The hard standing is now complete, and the brass plaques saying that the seats are to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen are in place. The picture shows RODSEC Chairman, Mrs Ann Burston.

RODSEC - News (Autumn 2003 - Rollestonian)

The hard standing under the seats that we had installed on the Croft to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen will be completed as soon as possible. When this work is done, the brass plaques will be put in place. I understand that the Parish Council has complained to the firm who mow the Croft about the fact that they have completely destroyed the primroses and winter aconites which we planted. We await further developments.

Our joint venture with Stretton Theatre and Revue Society (STARS), "Make 'em Laugh", was very successful. The STARS put on a very professional and amusing programme, which was much enjoyed. This was their first performance for eighteen months, and they asked for RODSEC's help with their relaunch. STARS very generously gave their performance for nothing, so all profits accrued to RODSEC, and for this and a fun-packed evening we thank them.

On Saturday 20th. September, at the Scout HQ at 7.30 p.m., we shall have an evening of Victorian magic-lantern slides, when Mr. Ray Gilbert will put on his "Gilbert's Galantee Show". There will be licensed bar. The cost will be £5, which includes supper. Tickets will be available from the Post Office, Starbuck News and me, Ann Burston (tel. 813457) , in early September. Buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Mrs. Lesley Smith of Tutbury Castle will give her "Gloriana" performance on Saturday 31st. January next year. This is a joint venture with Rolleston on Dove WI, and we shall share the work and the profits.

Please note the change of date for the talk on well-dressing by Mrs. Isabel Davies from Newborough. This will now take place in the Old Grammar School at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday 1st. October, not Monday 29th. September as originally planned. Admission is free.

Isabel will tell us all that we need to know about well-dressing so, if you are interested in having a go, would like to collect useful bits and pieces, grow flowers or just learn how it's done, please come along. The meeting is open to everyone. As part of our day of traditional English events on Saturday 3rd. July 2004, we shall have a well-dressing around the pump at the Almshouses.

On this traditional English day, we shall have entertainment for all the family. On the Croft there will be craft demonstrations, maypole dancing, traditional games, the Hearts of Oak Morrismen will perform and cream teas will be served. In St. Mary's Church there will be brass rubbing, the bells will be rung, the organ played, Doveside WI Belle-plate Ringers will perform, and there will be a display based on the sale of the Mosley estate. We are still working on this, and there will be more information available in forthcoming Rollestonians.

Ann Burston, Chairman.

RODSEC - News (Summer 2003 - Rollestonian)

The two seats are now in place on the Croft and the Spring planting is complete. Hard standing will be put in place, and we have plaques which will be put on the seats to say that they commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen. Many thanks to members of RODSEC for their hard work on this project.

The Musical Supper in March was very much enjoyed and we were left wanting to hear more of the de Ferrers Brax Band and members of the Burton Operatic Society. We could well have a repeat performance at some time in the future.

On 17th May, we are putting on "Make 'em Laugh" jointly with the Stretton S.T.A.R.S. We are promised an evening of mirth, madness and culture, with Shakespeare as we have never seen it. I am sure that it will be another "good do".

On Saturday 20th September, we shall have an evening of Victorian magic lantern slides at the Scout HQ at 7.30 p.m. The slides are shown by Mr. Ray Gilbert, and he calls it "Gilbert's Galantee Show". There will be a supper provided and a licensed bar.

Mrs. Leslie Smith of Tutbury Castle will do her talk on Gloriana in the Scout HQ on Saturday 31st January at 7.30 p.m. This is a joint venture with Rolleston on Dove Women's Institute. Look out for more details nearer the time.

Make a note of the date 3rd July 2004. We shall have a day of traditional English events on the Croft, in the Church and the Old Grammar School. We shall have well-dressing around the pump at the Almshouses and at the front of St. Mary's Church. Mrs. Isabel Davies, who does much of the work on the Newborough well-dressings, will give us a talk and show slides on "how it's done" on Wednesday 1st October at 7.30 p.m. in the Old Grammar School. Isabel will bring a board for us to try our hand. If you would like to help, please come along. Admission will be free. We need to start collecting seeds, cones, etc., and I have a list of the things needed to create the pictures. If anyone has a spare corner in their garden or allotment, it would be nice if they could help out by growing flowers for us to use, as it takes a lot of petals.

Ann Burston, Chairman.

RODSEC - News (Spring 2003 - Rollestonian)

Since the Winter Rollestonian was published, we have obtained permission from the Parish Council to erect two seats on the Croft, between the existing ones. These will be made by local craftsmen and put on hard standing. This was the type of permanent memorial most favoured by village organisations, and takes account of the fact that the Croft should be maintained as an open space, and that minimum maintenance will be required. We were also given permission to plant primroses, snowdrops and winter aconites. Members of RODSEC have already planted primroses, and I hope you have enjoyed them as much as I have. The snowdrops and winter aconites will be planted in March.

Awards for All allowed us to use the money remaining from the grant to create archives of the Golden Jubilee Village Festival. Arnold and I have now completed them. One copy will be deposited with the Public Library in Burton on Trent and the other kept in the village.

Our next event is a Musical Supper on 8th March, when we will be entertained by the de Ferrers Brax Band (brass instruments and saxophones), and members of the Burton Operatic Society will sing “Songs from the Shows”.

On Saturday 20th September, we shall have an evening of Victorian magic lantern slides in the Scout Headquarters at 7.30pm. The slides will be shown by Mr Ray Gilbert, and he calls it “Gilbert’s Galantee Show”. There will be supper provided and a licensed bar.

Looking towards 2004, on 3rd July, we hope to have a day of English traditional events on the Croft. It will include the Mummers’ Play, Morris Men, a Maypole and cream teas. If you have any ideas of things we could do, please let me know.

Ann Burston
Chairman
