Autumn Event 2001

The 'Spuds and Puds' evening on 13th October 2001 was a great success. There was quite a procession of people walking through the village carrying cool bags, or in this case, hot bags, full of spuds or pretty dishes containing puds.

A total of £520.62 was raised. Tom's raffle made £200.02, and Verity's reverse bingo made £101.00. Many thanks to the workers in the kitchen and behind the bar, to Ellen, Jonathon and Hilary who entertained us so well, and to everyone who gave puddings, cooked potatoes, or raffle prizes and to everyone who came along and supported us so generously.

Everyone said how much they enjoyed the evening, I know I did. (Ann Burston - RODSEC Chairman)

RODSEC Announce Plans to Revive Mummers' Play

Before the First World War, a Mummers' Play used to be performed in Rolleston between Christmas and the New Year. We should like to perform this play again during the Festival in 2002. We have the words: Mr Topliss (Duncan's father) gave them to me in 1976, and have just received a copy of the music to which the chorus was sung. Most of the words were spoken. It has a cast of 12 characters, so all the parts are quite small.

It does not take very long to perform and we are looking for musicians and performers. Mr Mel Constable and Mr John Phillips have kindly agreed to be in charge and will hold rehearsals in the Church Room on Monday nights, starting at the end of October between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. It will be an interesting thing to do, please let us know if you would like to be involved. (Ann Burston - RODSEC Chairman)

Village Raffle

The Village Raffle was drawn on 20th March 2001 at 8 p.m. at Rolleston Club. Prizes included £100 - lunch for two, corporate entertainment and two seats in the stands to watch a Burton Albion match - two club badges for a day at Uttoxeter Racecourse -   and tickets for two at a selected Premier League game at Derby County.

The proceeds will be used for a Village Festival, including an exhibition in St. Mary's Church and Church Room next year, to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to raise £559 from the Village Raffle. We greatly appreciate all the help given by the donors and the warm welcome given us at Rolleston club on the evening of the draw. Mark Blount and David Rennie from Burton Albion F.C. drew out the winning tickets and a pleasant evening was had by all. All 34 winners have received their prizes, with which they were delighted. Thank you for your support. (Ann Burston - RODSEC Chairman)

Launch of Village Raffle

A Soup and Puddings Evening was held at the Scout Headquarters on Saturday 27 January 2001 at 7.30 pm in order to launch a village raffle.  Homemade soups and puddings were served, and there was a licensed bar and a table-top quiz.  The cheque to WaterAid, the charity supported by the village last year, was presented, and there was a chance to see Mr. John Parker's video of the planting of the Time Capsule by the pupils of the John of Rolleston School. Over 100 people attended.

An Introduction

The success of the Millennium events and community interest that they have created have led to the formation of Rolleston on Dove Special events committee (RODSEC) to arrange occasional special events for everyone in the village to enjoy.  The Chairman is Mrs. Ann Burston and the Secretary is Mr. Tom Martin.

This committee held its first meeting on 5 October 2000; many village organisations were represented. They are intending to arrange events on a periodic basis, but will not interfere with activities which any organisation may wish to generate on its own account. Their on-going activities will be reported to the Village Liaison Committee and to the Annual Parish meeting. They shall arrange events for everyone in Rolleston on Dove to enjoy, which they hope will enhance the community spirit.

They shall hold a Festival to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen in 2002. It is hoped that organisations in the village will arrange their own events and an exhibition, with free admission will be held in the Church and Church Room. In order to raise funds for the Exhibition, they have already held a very successful coffee evening in December 2000, and thank village organisations and individuals for their support. It was an enjoyable way to raise money!
