Rolleston Club News 1999 - 2000

Summer 2000

Rolleston on Dove Horticultural and Handicraft Show will be held on Saturday 2nd September at Rolleston Club, Burnside.

This year it will be open to the public so everyone can enter. How many times have we all said "I can do a better flower arrangement" or "My tomatoes are bigger" etc.

Well, prove it! Come along and enter, you do not have to be an expert gardener, all entries are welcome as in the evening we hold an auction of the remaining produce to raise money for the O.A.Ps.

There are categories to suit all ages, classes include vegetables, flowers, plants, cookery, handicrafts, wines, fruits and special childrens’ section.

Lady and Gents Shields will be awarded to entries withy the most points. (So the more classes you enter, the more chance you have of winning cash prizes and also the special exhibit awards for the best item in each category.)

Exhibits will be accepted from 12.00noon – 2.30pm
Adults 20p /entry, children 10p/entry.
Main Hall to be vacated for judging 3.00 – 4.00pm

Take this opportunity to relax and have a drink in the club bar.

Cards and exhibits should not be removed until 6.00pm when the Presentation of Special Awards will take place. (Cash prizes can be collected anytime between 4.00pm to 6.00pm), any items remaining will be sold in the Auction which will start at approximately 6.30pm.

So, if you are not sure of what to do or enter this year, come and take a look so that you can prepare for next year’s Show.

Any donations for the Auction will be greatly appreciated.

Schedules and Entry forms will be available from Rolleston Club, Post Office or Starbucks Newsagents.

We like to think our horticultural show is part of village tradition and your help, ideas and support in any way to keep this tradition alive will be much appreciated.

Remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Winter 1999

After the Institution of the Reverend Ian Whitehead on October 12th, everyone retired to Rolleston Club for refreshments. I was chatting to one or two people, when someone said, "Hello Jim, we have lived in this village for over four years, and it is the first time that we have ever been in the Club. Isn’t it a lovely place?"

I agreed and suggested that I show them around. In the lounge they met some friends and decided to stop for the rest of the evening. They told me that they would very much like to join the Club.

It’s quite surprising how many people who live in the village, have never been in the Club before. Have you ever been in Rolleston Club?

The committee will be very happy to show you around, and if you like what you see, why not join?

The Club opening hours are as follows, Monday - Saturday - 12noon - 11pm and Sunday 12noon - 3.00pm and 7.00pm - 10.30 pm.

The club has two full - size snooker tables and a very nice bowling green. The many activities that take place in the club are as follows;

Mon - Darts, Whist, Dominoes

Tues - Crib, Darts, Snooker

Wed - Quiz Night

Thurs - Whist, Ladies Darts, Snooker

Fri - Bingo

Sat - Live Entertainment

Sun - Bingo

Bowling takes place during the summer months.

Regular meetings are held by the Fishing Club and by the Gardening Club.

We have a very fine selection of beers and wines from Bass, Marstons, and various guest beers.

I extend a warm welcome to you all and I look forward to seeing you at our Club.

(J G Toon - President)
