Pre-school plans for new building with community use

January 2007 will mark the start of a major campaign to replace our Rolleston Pre-School building. Our current mobile accommodation is reaching the end of its lifespan and we wish to replace it with a modern volumetric building which will give shared access with John of Rolleston Primary School to play areas and play equipment. The accommodation proposed will include a community/multi-use room which will enable the school to provide facilities for small group teaching and special educational needs support. The room will also cater for community functions as required by Central Government agendas for extended school and Community Learning Partnerships. Funding this new facility will not be easy. Our Management Committee is currently researching our eligibility for grants and sponsorships as well as planning our fundraising campaign for next year.

We are pleased to report that we have the support of the Parish Council and the voluntary organisations and groups within the village. We are also pleased to announce the Burton Mail’s interest in our project, (you may have already seen their recent articles). They are very keen to promote and run regular features from the beginning of the project to the end, and the pressure is now on for us to drive our initiative forward. All our fundraising activities and our progress on the project for the new building will be regularly documented in future editions of the Rollestonian as well as the local press.

We cannot do this alone and we desperately need your help to re-enforce the need for a village Pre-School/Community Room in order to add weight to our grant application. Please lobby your support and ideas by sending the attached slip to

Rebecca Carlton, (Chair) 128 Station Road, Rolleston on Dove, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire DE13 9AB.

If you are a parent whose child currently attends Pre-School, you may hand your slip to a member of staff.

Rolleston Pre-School

The first term of the new school year has proved to be a successful settling-in period for all our new faces at Toddlers, In-Betweenies and Pre-School. The children have built up their confidence, made new friends and are having lots of fun.

The Pre-School held its AGM in October and although this year we have experienced significant changes on the committee with members in more senior roles stepping down, either due to their children moving on or the fact that they had completed their 4-year term of office, we were successful in recruiting some new members, which I am pleased to say bring with them skills, experience and knowledge that will benefit the Pre-School. Welcome to you all.

The names and contact details of the new senior committee members are as follows:

Telephone Number
Rebecca L Carlton (Chair) 01283 520352
Jo Lumby (Vice-Chair) 01283 814289
Tracey Bullock (Secretary) 01283 565343
Michelle Redgrave (Treasurer)

Our fundraising events started in October when we held a Halloween Disco. There were lots of messy, creepy crawly activities, especially the ‘green jelly’ pit which the children couldn’t wait to delve their hands in up to their elbows to find a hidden scary Halloween toy! Thank you to the Pre-School staff who assisted with the very ‘ghoulish’ face-painting and a big thank you to Mr Kevin Pearson who kindly volunteered himself and his disco for the afternoon free of charge. We will continue our fundraising events in the New Year, which will include the Chocolate Bingo and the Toy Sale, so look out for our posters.

The children are busy preparing for Christmas and this year they will be creating something extra special for their families, in the form of ceramic tile painting. The children will each be given a tile on which they will press their hand-print on with special paint, which will also include their name and year it was created. The tiles can be framed (if so desired) and can be displayed in the home as a long lasting memory of those Pre-School years.

The Pre-School Nativity Play will be taking place on Friday 15th December at 2pm in the Methodist Chapel. All parents and carers are invited to come along and support their child. Light refreshments will be available, together with a raffle for the adults and a lucky dip for the children.

The Pre-School Christmas Party will be taking place on Monday 18th December at 2pm, which will include snacks and party games for the children and a visit from Santa.

For 2007, the Pre-School will start the New Year with a new Pre-School Manager. It is with regret that after many years, Janet Wood has resigned as Pre-School Manager to take up a District Advisory Officer role within childcare with Staffordshire County Council. This is a career progression for Janet, and all the staff, committee members (new and old) and parents alike would like to convey to Janet their very best wishes and every happiness in her new venture. She will be greatly missed. Mrs Kim Owen will be acting up as Pre-School Manager in the interim until a new Manager has been appointed.

If you would like to register your child or have any queries regarding sessions, please contact Kim Owen at Pre-School on 01283 239 209.

Rolleston Toddlers

On Thursday 19th October, we officially said our goodbyes to Jill who retired from our Toddler Group. Jill has dedicated most of her working life to teaching children and preparing them for Pre-School. A big THANK YOU Jill for everything you have given to the community over the years and we all wish you well in your retirement.

Toddlers and In-Betweenies will be holding their Christmas Party on Wednesday 13th December at the Scout HQ with Jo Jingles as entertainer and a visit from Santa. Lunch will also be provided.

Toddlers-Tuesday & Friday 10am-11:30am

If you would like your child to join in the fun and if you would like more information on your child joining Toddlers, please contact Fiona Laughton, Toddler Liaison Officer on 509022.

Rolleston In-Betweenies

The In-Betweenies session is devised to bridge the gap a year prior to commencing Pre-School and is aimed at children from 2½ years. The session is more structured with a variety of crafts, a play area, reading and music.

In-Betweenies - Thursdays 10am-11:30am

For further information on your child joining In-Betweenies, please contact Mandy Hutson-Smith on 01283 814061

All parents and carers are welcome to come along for a free session at Toddlers and/or In-Betweenies before registering.

On behalf of Rolleston Pre-School staff and Committee Members, we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Chair

Autumn 2006 News

Rolleston Pre-School

With the hottest summer on record, we certainly had the weather on our side for all our summer events and activities, which included the Annual Community Day, our leavers’ trip to Ash End House Children’s Farm, and the Annual Fun Day.

This year’s Auction of Promises was, once again, very entertaining and well supported. We raised over £3000 as a result of the generosity of our donors, parents and successful bidders, bringing the total raised this year to a wonderful £4,000.

These fundraising activities mark the start of a major campaign to replace the Pre-School building. Please come along and support us in our endeavours to continue to provide a high quality of pre-school care within our village.

All the help and dedication from our Committee Members has been greatly appreciated. Special thanks go to our retiring Committee Members who have worked hard to support Pre-School during their terms of office. We are looking for new members to join the Committee, so if you would like to join us or find out more, please contact Janet Wood (Pre-School Manager) on 01283 239209 or Mandy Hutson (Chairperson) on 01283 814061.

Our fundraising events will continue as usual throughout the year, starting with a disco/social evening (over 18’s only) on Saturday 14th October at the Alderbrook Site.

Mrs Fritchley left the Pre-School at the end of this term to move to Devon. Lynn was a key member of the Pre-School team for over four years and her enthusiasm and warmth will be greatly missed.

Good luck to all our Pre-Schoolers who will have now started school. We hope you settle in well, make lots of friends and enjoy all the new activities that await you. We are sure you will have a great time and don’t forget to wave as you pass us on your way to and from school!

If you would like to register your child or have any queries regarding sessions, please contact Kim Owen at Pre-School on 01283 239209.

Rolleston Toddlers

We say goodbye to our Toddlers who will have moved up to our ‘In-Betweenies Sessions’ and a big welcome to our new arrivals. We hope you will have lots of fun with our selection of new toys and enjoy our craft sessions.

Toddler Sessions commence on 7th September. There are places still available if you have not yet registered your child, so please contact Louise on 815440 to book your place.

Rolleston In-Betweenies

A big welcome to our ‘In-Betweenies’ who have now moved up to Pre-School. We hope you have enjoyed our sessions as much as we have.

The ‘In-Betweenies’ session is devised to bridge the gap a year prior to commencing Pre-School and is therefore, aimed at children aged 2½. The ‘In-Betweenies’ Session commences on Thursday 9th September. Places are available, so anyone wishing to register their child should contact Mandy Hutson on 814061.

All carers and toddlers are welcome to come along for a free session before registering. To register your child at any of the following sessions, including the In-Betweenies, contact Louise Arnold on 01283 815440.

Summer 2006 News

Rolleston Pre-School

Springtime was buzzing with fundraising activities. We sprung into action with the annual Pancake Race in February, the Chocolate Bingo held in March raised over £330 for our Pre-School funds and the children had a fun-packed week in May as they took part in our annual sponsored bounce. We also hope you caught sight of our very colourful “Hawaiian” themed float at the village Carnival. Thanks go to all those who volunteered to help and take part in our events.

All our energies are now focussing on our main fundraising event of the year, “The Auction of Promises”. This will take place on Saturday 24th June at the John of Rolleston School Alderbrook Site at 8pm, so make a note in your diaries. There will be a bar, buffet and an auctioneer. We have received a good response to our request for promises, but we still need more whether they are large or small. Tickets are now on sale at a cost of £5 and in addition to your ticket you will receive a booklet providing information on Promises we have received so far. To pledge your promises and/or to purchase tickets, please contact Laurie Stevenson on telephone number: 01283 810167 or a member of the Pre-School Committee.

The annual Community Day takes place on 10th June at the John of Rolleston School, Alderbrook Site and once again we will be supporting this community event. Please come along and visit us on our stand.

The Pre-School children will be visiting Ash End House Children’s Farm on 17th July for their Leavers Trip. There will also be a Pre-School Fun Day taking place on 20th July at the Rolleston Scout Headquarters, Station Road. We have organised lots of activities, including go-carts, bouncy castle, races, hook a duck, face painting, teddies and we hope to have a visit from a fire engine! Bring a picnic and join us.

As another Pre-School year comes to a close, good luck wishes are sent to all our new Pre-Schoolers who will be starting in September. We hope you settle in well, make lots of friends and enjoy all the new activities that await you. We would also like to encourage parents who have an interest in the welfare of the Pre-School to join our Committee and support our fundraising initiatives.

If you would like to register your child or have any queries regarding sessions, please contact Kim Owen at Pre-School on 01283 239209.

Spring 2006 News

Pre-School

HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back after the Christmas break. The children enjoyed their Christmas Party and their Nativity Play. The Christmas Cards sold well and we received many orders from our Fundraising Catalogue. Many thanks to all of you who supported the Christmas events.

We have lots of fundraising events planned for 2006, the first being the Annual Pancake Race at The Croft at 2pm on 25th February. The Committee will be providing the catering and funds raised will be shared with St Mary’s Church.

On 11th March we are holding our popular Chocolate Bingo at the John of Rolleston Primary School, Alderbrook Site, Chapel Lane from 2.00pm until 4.00pm. There are 22 games with over 100 prizes and there will be separate games for adults, children and Pre-Schoolers. Donations of chocolate and other prizes for our raffle are welcome.

Funds raised at last year’s Auction of Promises have enabled the purchase of a new adventure tower for the playground. We are very grateful to everyone who supported the fundraising event. Make sure you and your family and friends support this year’s event on 24th June. We need promises, large or small. You can promise your time or your expertise, such as help with gardening or the care of a pet or a special event such as a stay in a holiday cottage or theatre tickets. There will be a bar, buffet and an auctioneer, so put the date in your diary. (Venue TBC)

Other events this year include the Carnival, with the Pre-School hoping to enter a decorated float and the Community Day with the Pre-School joining John of Rolleston Primary School to have a stall. Please help to make this event a success.

If you would like to register your child or have any queries regarding sessions, please contact Kim Owen at Pre-School on 01283 239209.

Rolleston Toddlers

The Toddlers Annual Christmas Party was held in the Scout building, which the children thoroughly enjoyed with Santa’s visit and entertainment from Jo Jingles. Many thanks to those who helped with food and decorations.

Every year the Pre-School children take part in a sponsored fundraising event. Two years ago the Toddlers had their own sponsored assault course which was very successful, raising over £160 for new toys. We are repeating the fun and fitness theme again this year and will be constructing an assault course for the Toddlers during their Toddler and In-Betweenies Sessions on 28th February and 2nd and 3rd March. We hope to raise enough funds for a new wooden train set.
