Old Grammar School

The Old Grammar School, situated in the grounds of St Mary’s Church, was founded in 1520 by a native of the village, one Robert Sherborne, Bishop of Chichester. The school's original Tudor building was burnt down and the present one replaced it in 1638. When the new primary school was built in 1909, the Grammar school ceased to function.

The building is used regularly by village organisations and is also available to hire by the general public.

Dr Williams’ School Old Girls’ Association
Daffodil Lunch

On Saturday 16 April 2005 the Old Grammar School in Rolleston was the venue for a daffodil lunch.

Margaret Hewitt took the idea from last year's successful Daffodil lunches – the focus of these was a guided tour of Rolleston by Arnold Burston with catering by members of the WI and Mothers’ Union.

This one was primarily a money-raising event. Thirty years ago this July Dr Williams’ School, Dolgellau closed, and a group of former pupils decided they wished to commemorate the school by commissioning a book detailing its history. A researcher has been found who is willing to start work in the summer, building on an unpublished MA thesis which dealt with the history of the school up to 1945. In order to meet his expenses a working fund needs to be set up and the money raised by this lunch will be a start.

Since Dr Williams’ School was a boarding school which took many girls from the Midlands, the Old Grammar School, Rolleston, seemed an ideal place for holding such an event.

Old Girls from this area were joined by others from North Wales, the North West and the Home Counties. Some of them are pictured below.

It was the first school in which Margaret Hewitt taught and arranging the lunch was her contribution to the project. She is grateful to the Rev. Ian Whitehead and the Church Wardens for agreeing to the use of the Old Grammar School, and to her Rolleston friends who worked so hard beforehand and on the day to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

Final figures have yet to be worked out, but approximately £250.00 has been raised for the working fund!
