Mummer Madness
Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 June on the Croft throughout the day.

Featuring performances of the Lancaster Pace Egg Play by a sundry collection of rustic volunteers - Katherine Phillips, Jennifer Phillips, Duncan Gordon, John Cartwright, Matthew Bancroft, Val Keeling, John Phillips, Pete Williams, Arnold Burston, Margaret Smedley and Delia Wyers - and directed by Mel Constable. The collections that followed each performance raised a considerable amount for church funds.

The accompanying musicians were Patsy Starbuck, Audrey Gordon, Michael Marrison, Roy Marrison, Sarah Murfin, Gemma Bower and Grant Ashenden.

The script of the distinctive Rolleston version of the Pace Egging play was given to Ann Burston by Ben Topliss at the time of the 'Bygones Exhibition' in 1974. Mr Topliss had performed the play in Rolleston before the First World War, when the players went round the farms, where they were literally entertained. The music was provided by a harmonium which was dragged around in a hand-cart. As well as the traditional characters of St George, the Black Prince, Slasher and the Doctor, the cast includes Lord Nelson, Lord Collingwood and Jolly Jack Tar. The 'last war' refers to the war against Napoleon, so the Rolleston version may well date from the early 19th Century. The last known performance in the village was Christmas 1911.
