The Mellstock Band Comes to Rolleston
Wednesday 29 May, 7.30 pm in St Mary's Church.

Rolleston Civic Trust brought the famous Mellstock Band to the village for a concert in the church as part of the jubilee festivities.

The Mellstock Band plays and sings music from English villages from the 18th Century to the present day. The repertoire and style comes from village musicians' manuscript books and from living traditions of song and instrumental music from all parts of England. The musicians, dressed in period costumes, play fiddle, concertina, clarinet, oboe, flute and even a serpent.

The band has performed at festivals throughout England and has toured in America, Europe and Africa. They regularly appear on radio, and were featured in television adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, The Return of the Native and Tess of the D'Urbervilles.

The Rolleston concert was their "Human Shows", a tour of Hardy's musical world from "Mellstock" (Hardy's native Stinsford in Dorset) to Casterbridge and from Mixen Lane to Vauxhall Gardens.
