Friends of John of Rolleston Primary School News 2003

Newsletter - Winter 2003

September saw the AGM where the FOJORPS Committee for 2003-2004 was chosen – a volunteer is worth 10 pressed men! Thank you to our retiring members for their work over the past years, and thank you to the new and returning members for the work they will do to support the School over the next twelve months.

Events have already begun for the new Committee – we ran our twice annual Quiz Night and Autumn Children’s Disco in October, and will run our Crafts for Christmas Fayre on 23rd November. Both Infant and Junior school children enjoyed their Disco’s on 4th October – we have never before run out of sweets so quickly! Eighteen teams took part in the Quiz Night on 18th October, won by ‘The Weakest Links’ after a tie-break – two teams tied on 90½ points. Thanks to all who supported these events.

Over the Summer holiday, FOJORPS submitted an application to the National Lottery through ‘Awards for All’ to fund additional drinking fountains and shaded areas on the playground for Key Stage 1 (Sherborne Site). In September we were notified that an award for £4048 had been granted to facilitate this project. These should help to make the Summer months on the Sherborne site more bearable for pupils and staff alike! Awards for All is a fund linked to the National Lottery that will consider applications of between £500 and £5000 for charitable organisations.

Over the Christmas period, FOJORPS will, as usual, be supporting the Christmas activities run for both Infant and Junior pupils – we hope that they enjoy the events that are organised for them be the staff.

Dates for your Diary:

Saturday 7th February - Children’s Discos (Sherborne Site)
Saturday 20th March - Quiz Night (Alderbrook Site)
Saturday 12th June - Community Day (Alderbrook Site)

Once again, your support for these events is requested, both in attendance and in helping – we can’t run them without you! If you would like to know more about FOJORPS, its’ aims and operation, contact any of the committee members through the school office.

Footnote: It has been brought to my attention that the Community Day profits exceeding £5,000 for the first time this year as stated in the previous edition of Rollestonian was not correct – the magic £5000 has been achieved on previous occasions. Apologies to those involved!

Newsletter - Autumn 2003

The end of another academic year has arrived, and with it the most successful Community Day ever! For the first time this year FOJORPS and John of Rolleston Primary School passed the £5,000 barrier - thanks to everybody from the village and outside that supported either on the day, or in the preparation for the event. Without the help of lots of people – too many to name here - such a successful day would not happen. Thank you to all those who wished for good weather for us on the weekend of June 7th - Friday started off wet, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the vast army of helpers that Mr Arblaster found from within the school, and Saturday dawned as a perfect day for the event - sunny enough but not too hot! Please start praying for good weather for next year's Community Day to be held on Saturday 12th June. We are now taking a well earned, albeit short, break over the summer to recharge our batteries ready for the next onslaught from September!

Our next events are already coming together. As usual in the autumn term we will be organising Children's Disco's for the school's pupils - that takes place on Saturday October 4th on the Sherbourne site.

The Quiz Night will make a welcome return on Saturday October 18th on the Alderbrook site followed in November by the Annual Craft Fayre on Sunday 23rd November to be held as usual at Rolleston Scout HQ. We look forward to seeing you there to buy those different Christmas gifts from the array of local craft producers that are represented.

However, none of these events can be organised until after the AGM for which the date is now fixed as Monday 15th September. Everybody is welcome to attend this meeting.

We will be welcoming the new Reception children to the school in September, along with their families to support our events, and of course send best wishes to those who left Year 6 in July as they move on in their academic lives.

If you require further details for any of these events, please contact the committee through the School Office.

The Friends of John of Rolleston Primary School committee members this year are:
Chair – Caroline Mills; Vice Chair – Sarah Abel; Secretary – Sue Jacklin; Treasurer – Wanda Russell; Richard Abel; Julie Bellm; Karen Hugh; Jeremy Marshall; Adam McLoughlin; Karen Salisbury; Julia Sargent; Clare Stewart; Jo Wright plus staff members.

I have now taken over the job of filling the Rollestionian slot for FOJORPS from Caroline Mills – thanks to Caroline for the sterling job she has done in publicising our activities to support the school.

FOJORPS has had a makeover! Since the last edition of Rollestonian was published, FOJORPS has had an identity crisis, following which we have adopted the new logo. From now on, you will see it on anything related to FOJORPS.

We ran a very successful Quiz Night in March – so many teams wanted to enter that we almost filled the school hall to bursting point! Thanks to all who supported this event. Our next Quiz Night will be held on Saturday October 18th – come and pit your brains against the best questions that we can muster!

Preparations are well under way for Community Day – Let’s pray for good weather on Saturday 7th June!

Attractions include the ever-popular puppet show, Kartz for Kids will once again be there, Bouncy ‘Things’, the Rollercoaster, the Cake Stall, Tin Can Alley, the Ducking Stool, the Grand Prize Draw will be made, get lost in the Adventure Cave etc. etc. Come out with your family and friends to enjoy yourself!

This year sees the school lose the large year that has been going through the school over the last seven years. Year Six will leave us in July to continue their schooling at De Ferrers and other local schools – we wish them well wherever their schooling takes them. We hope they enjoy their night out and leavers’ gifts both funded with donations from FOJORPS.

Dates for your Diary:

Saturday 7th June – Community Day
September (Date to be confirmed) – Annual General Meeting
Saturday 4th October – Children’s Disco
Saturday 18th October – Quiz Night
Sunday 23rd November – Craft Fayre

The Friends of John of Rolleston Primary School committee members are: Caroline Mills (Chair), Sarah Abel (Vice Chair), Sue Jacklin (Secretary), Wanda Russell (Treasurer), Richard Abel, Julie Bellm, Jeremy Marshall, Adam Mcloughlin, Karen Salisbury, Julia Sargent, Clare Stewart and Jo Wright.

Our second biggest community event of the year “Crafts for Christmas” was held at the Scout HQ on November 17th. We had hoped to raise lots of money, as school looks to us at Christmas time to pay for most of the fun and seasonal activities that the children thoroughly enjoy, and thanks to the generosity of the village and parents we raised a wonderful £866.86.

Our next event will be the Fun Quiz on March 15th 2003. Tickets for the Quiz can be requested via the school office and cost £10 for a team of 4, a supper is included and a licensed bar is available or telephone me on 563232.

Looking slightly further ahead the very important event “Community Day” will be on June 7th 2003 . Local support and encouragement is very important and willing help from non-committee is very much appreciated.

We would be delighted to hear from you about any aspect of FOJORPS activities.
