Doveside WI News 2004

Newsletter - Winter 2004

Who would have thought one could have an interesting morning listening to someone “Talk Rubbish”! At the September meeting of Doveside W.I. this was the case – a speaker from the local authority gave a talk on “Environmental Recycling”. Although much is being done by members, there is so much more that we can all do, and it is important that the local authority inform and encourage.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there have been some changes to speakers – the topic for the October meeting was “The History of Table Linen, and the Art of Napkin Folding” – again, a subject of greater interest than many had expected.

In November we are looking forward to hearing an account of life in the Australian outback and our December meeting promises an entertaining look at memories of Christmas Past, followed by a buffet lunch organised by committee members.

Although this seems a distant memory now, the summer outing to Tissington Hall was a great success, and during the winter members will be attending a W.I. Market Day at Stafford, Group Meetings with other W.I.s, theatre visits, craft workshops, Scrabble sessions, and, of course, the annual Carol Services in both Rolleston Church and Lichfield Cathedral.

Meetings are held at 9.45am on the third Friday morning of the month at Rolleston Scout HQ. For further information please contact Mrs E. Hood on 813670.

Newsletter - Autumn 2004

Doveside W.I. continues to thrive in the capable hands of our President Ann Haywood. Meeting on the third Friday of each month at 9.45am it has an interesting and varied programme.

Recently, there have been light-hearted talks about “Public Speaking”, and “Memories of Living above an Ironmongers Shop Between the Wars”. The Collections Manager from Sudbury Hall Museum of Childhood gave an illustrated history of “Sunday Toys and Street Toys” at the July meeting, and this was followed by a most enjoyable Ploughman’s Lunch organised by Committee members.

In the Autumn, topics for speakers include “Environmental Recycling”, “Sharpe’s Pottery (Swadlincote)”, “Flower Arranging” and Memories of Christmas Past”.

The Group also has other activities, including theatre visits, Scrabble and outings – the most recent a visit to Sinai House – and in August members are visiting Tissington Hall.

For further information, please contact Mrs E. Hood, Secretary on 813670.
