Autumn 2008 Newsletter

With the season about Ύ of the way through our first and second teams are doing well – with the 1st’s in 5th place in Division 1 and the 2nd’s in 3rd place in 4S respectively. The 3rd and 4th teams on the other hand are finding it difficult with only one win each. However, the enthusiasm remains high and thanks to the new 4th team lots of our younger players have been given an opportunity to play in senior league cricket, and many have performed commendably well - which has to be good for the future.

Our junior teams, although well supported, had a somewhat disappointing season as regards results, but once again enthusiasm remains high. U-11 Kwik-cricket was particularly well supported. We are hoping to start a girls team soon – if you are interested, of school age please contact the Club secretary. Our thanks go to all those who managed our junior sides for all the hard work they put in week by week.

This season sees the end of the Burton & District Cricket League and as a consequence a complete re-structuring of the Derbyshire County Cricket League to incorporate as many of the Burton League teams as possible.

Our thanks must also go to Dave Woodburn and John Hodson for preparing the grounds at Rolleston and Marchington week in, week out, whatever the weather. It has not been easy with so many matches now being played, particularly at The Willows.

The last home league games of the season are :

Sat August 30th – 1st XI v. Clifton
Sat Sept 6th – 2nd XI v. Melbourne
Sun Sept 7th – 1st XI v. Marehay
Sat Sept 13th – 4th XI v. Trentside

Junior Cricket

The club has a vibrant junior section, running sides at a variety of age groups. Over the years many of these youngsters have progressed to represent district and county sides at youth level, or have graduated to the senior teams.

Children of primary school age start with “Kwik Cricket”, a short game played with a soft ball which involves all the participants, and then go on, through carefully planned stages, to hard ball cricket at Under 11 and older age groups.

All the coaches and team managers are experienced and have been vetted to work with children through the appropriate CRB checks. The club takes its duty of care and safeguarding of children seriously.

Boys and girls are warmly invited to come to the club. For ages 7 and above, Kwik cricket sessions are held on Fridays from 5.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Under 11 hardball practice starts at 5.30 on the same evening. The Kwik Cricket practice sessions alternate with tournaments played amongst local clubs. We also run junior coaching (U-13 to U-17) on Tuesday evenings from 5.30 pm

Our U-17s play on Monday evenings, U-15s on Thursday evenings and U-13s on Sunday mornings.

If parents would like any further information, please contact the club secretary Trevor Foster on 812824 or Bob James, cricket committee chairman, on 569306, or come to the club at the above times.

When there are no League or Cup fixtures there are friendly matches every Sunday at The Willows from 2.00 pm.

Supporters and visitors are always welcome on match days.

We shall once again be running junior teams at U-11( kwik cricket and hard ball ), U-13, U-15 and U-17 levels. If you are interested please contact the Club secretary – e-mail address below or telephone 01283 812824.
