Rolleston Cricket Club News 2004

Autumn 2004 Newsletter

With three quarters of the 2004 season now over it is pleasing to report that all of our senior teams are doing well in their respective divisions of The Derbyshire County Cricket League. However, pride of place must go to our under 17 team who were undefeated this season and completed a league and cup double for a second successive year. Many of these youngsters play in the senior teams on Saturdays and we are very fortunate to have so many quality young players at the Club.

The 1st XI secured the Brewery Cup with a convincing win over Winshill. Darren Yeomans and Chris Colley both reached centuries in the total of 332. This was followed by some excellent bowling from overseas player Jamel Noel who took 4 wickets for 9 runs in 10 overs, ably backed by Alex Britton and Graham Dent, which restricted Winshill to 71 all out.

In the League the 1st team are holding their own in Division 1 and recently completed a double over Spondon – one of the teams fancied for promotion. In fact with six matches to go, and lying in 4th place, there is still a possibility of Rolleston reaching the dizzy heights of Premier League cricket next season. There is no doubt that this season has produced much more consistent performances from all our players.

The 2nd team started rather poorly but have improved significantly of late with some excellent wins. At the time of writing they are 5th in Division 3S. Our 3rd team are currently top of Division 7S and hopeful of promotion – but the key matches against main rivals Brailsford are in the last three weeks of the season when we play them twice, following fixture rearrangements.

The 2004 season finishes on Sunday September 5th.

The social side of the Club then comes more to the fore with weekly and monthly events taking place. In particular I would remind you of the Under 13 Youth Club for our junior members on Tuesday evenings.

If you have recently moved into the area and/or would like to know more about the Club, please take a look at our website on www.rollestoncc.org.uk or contact the secretary Trevor Foster on 01283 812824

Summer 2004 Newsletter

The new season is under way and the ground looks really good after its levelling and re-seeding last September. Thanks are due to our groundsmen – Dave Woodburn and John Hodson - for their excellent work.

The first match on 24th April was a 1st team game against Dunstall CC.

It was our 1st XI’s debut in Division 1 of the Derbyshire County Cricket League. Dunstall who were relegated from the Premier Division last season seem determined to get back there asap. Their team included former Test player Devon Malcolm and a few county players. Rolleston too were fielding their first ever overseas player – Jamal Noel – a young fast bowler from Barbados. There was a wonderful turn out – on a lovely sunny afternoon (very unusual for the start of the cricket season !! ) – to watch the match.

Dunstall batted first and amassed 285 for 3 wickets, with both opening batsmen scoring over 100. Rolleston’s reply never really looked like getting very close to gaining a victory but they held out for a creditable draw (150 for 7 wickets) against such strong opposition. Life will not be easy for our 1st XI this season but we can expect some excellent cricket at The Willows with many all Division 1 Clubs having one or more overseas, county or professional players in their ranks.

The 2nd team won their opening match against Dunstall 2nds fairly comfortably with a good all-round performance.

The 3rd team also won a re-arranged match against Tutbury 3rds in a low scoring game at Dovecliff Road.

Following the loss of the cricket facilities at Pirelli the Club has struggled to find an alternative home venue, but Marchington CC came to our aid at the eleventh hour. A lot of work will be necessary though to get everything ready for the first match there on Saturday 15th May. However, our thanks go to Peter Ford and the trustees of Marchington CC for giving us the opportunity to play at their ground.
