Autumn 2001 Newsletter

At the time of writing we still have a quarter of the season left and are enjoying a successful first season in the Derbyshire County League. Both the first and second teams have acquitted themselves well with the first team still retaining slight hopes of promotion to Division 1.

The Burton Breweries Cup was retained after a well deserved win in the Final over old rivals Alrewas before a large crowd at Belvedere Park. Congratulations also go to the U-13s and U-15s who both won their respective league cups as well as finishing high in the league. Although the U-17s were not quite so successful the next two seasons should be more productive as the side was mainly composed of players from the younger age group.

The weather played a large part earlier in the season as several matches were lost to the rain. This also affected the installation of practice net facilities, but these are now in place having been funded by a loan from the Staffordshire Playing Fields Association. Hopefully, these will prove a boost to performances in the future.

The club is looking for additional sponsors from within the local community who may be able to assist us in enhancing our facilities still further for the benefit of young cricketers in the area. Anybody interested in acting as a sponsor should contact John Shakespear at 73, Station Road, Rolleston. (Tel: 812558)

Latest Cricket Report (by Trevor Foster - 13 July 2001)

The Cricket Club are currently running three Saturday sides, a Sunday team and junior teams at U-13, U-15 and U-17. We also cater for the U-11's with Kwik-Cricket events.

The 2001 local cricket season is now just past the half-way stage and it is pleasing to report the Club's 1st XI are playing well and are currently near the top of Division 2 of The Derbyshire County Cricket League. They have also reached the semi-finals of the Burton Breweries Cup Competition where they will visit Lullington on Sunday 15th July start 11.00 am.

The 2nd XI are fairing reasonably well in Division 4A where the standard is perhaps better than the 4A suggests. Several junior players including some U-13's have represented the Club in the Team and have performed really well.

Our 3rd Team are enjoying themselves in Division 4 of the Burton & District League and are also about mid-table. Home matches are played at the Pirelli Sports Ground.

All of the Club's junior sides are also doing well this season. We have recently acquired some outdoor nets at our ground in Dovecliff Road which will undoubtedly help with practicing and coaching.

Visitors are always welcome at The Willows, especially on match days.

Spring 2001 Newsletter

The forthcoming summer promises to be a very interesting one as the club begins its first season in the Derbyshire county league at first and second team level. Indoor nets have been taking place at Repton School since early January in readiness for the first round of fixtures starting at the end of April. Contact is maintained with Burton and District cricket through the third team who play at Pirelli’s ground and the three junior sides at under 13, 15 and 17 years age groups.

Following the disappointment at being refused a Lottery Grant towards major ground improvements we are determined to press ahead ourselves with the provision of practise net facilities prior to the start of the season, followed by ground levelling in early September.

Visitors are always welcome at “The Willows” throughout the year and not only during the summer months. The following is a list of home fixtures for the first half of the season for first and second teams.
