Newsletter - Autumn 2005

An audience of more than 80 people packed into the Scout Headquarters on 9 July for our programme of Viennese lollipops - topped by several helpings of the teenage jazz band Beyne Upbeat, who were giving not quite their last performance before going their separate ways. Soprano soloist Caroline Oakley was disappointed to have to cancel her appearance - but there was warm appreciation for the talented Ruth Dews, stepping in at the last minute.

Our next concert will be on Saturday 26 November, at 7.30 pm at St Peter's Church, Stapenhill. The main work will be Maurice Durufle's Requiem, plus a selection of choral highlights. Rehearsals start again on Wednesday 7 September, at 7.45 pm in the Methodist Chapel, Chapel Lane. New members are always welcome.

Newsletter - Summer 2005

More than 150 people were in St Peter's Church, Stapenhill, on 23 April to hear our performances of Haydn's Nelson Mass and Dvorak's Stabat Mater. Both were received with great acclaim. The young South Derbyshire violinist Sarah Vernon scored another huge hit at the same concert with her performance of Bruch's Violin Concerto. So don't miss our summer concert on Saturday 16th July, which will have a Viennese theme - with excerpts from Die Fledermaus and other popular operettas. Details and venue had still be decided at time of printing (Rollestonian), so watch out for local publicity nearer the time.

Newsletter - Spring 2005

Our next concert will feature two of the great works of the choral repertoire, along with one of the world's favourite violin concertos. Haydn's Nelson Mass is popularly supposed to celebrate Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, but is much more likely to have been given its name because Nelson and Emma Hamilton attended a performance of it in 1800. There are no fewer than 400 musical settings of the Stabat Mater, the Catholic liturgy recalling Mary's grief at the Cross. However Dvorak's, composed in 1884, is considered one of the most profound and melodic. And following her acclaimed performance in 2003 of Mendelssohn's violin concerto, the young soloist Sarah Vernon will be joining us to present another much-loved work from the violin repertoire, the tuneful and moving concerto by Bruch.

This concert will be on Saturday 23 April, at 7.30 pm, at St.Peter's Church, Stapenhill. Tickets at £6 and £4 will be available from Starbuck's News nearer the time, or on the door.
